The Health Tech Platform works with institutions and partners in the public and private sectors at regional/continental and sub-regional levels, as well as, in specific countries, to improve policy and regulatory frameworks on the development and use of emerging technologies and tools for tackling health challenges in Africa.
In Burkina Faso, the Nouna Health Research Centre/Centre de Recherche en Sante de Nouna (CRSN) leads the implementation of the Health Tech Platform’s activities. We are seeking to engage and/or partner with the Office of the President, the Ministry of Health, the Parliamentary Committee on Health, and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, in our work aimed at improving the policy and regulatory frameworks to guide the development and use of emerging technologies and tools for tackling health challenges.
We are also engaging scientists and ethicists to amplify their voices in increasing awareness and understanding among key stakeholders and the public on emerging new technologies for tackling health challenges.
We are also engaging and/or partnering CSOs to increase their understanding of emerging new technologies so that they can advocate for supportive policy and regulatory frameworks and investments that enable the development, testing and use of these technologies. CSOs are also playing a role in enhancing communities’ understanding of these new technologies.
We are also engaging and/or partnering with the media through working with journalists and editors to improve understanding of the emerging technologies in order to increase the volume and quality of media coverage of the emerging technologies and their role in addressing persisting and emerging health challenges in the country.
And finally, we are engaging with manufacturers and other private sector actors in efforts to bring them on board in ongoing efforts to develop, test or deploy new technologies to promote sustainable production of these new technologies in the country.
In Uganda, the Center for Policy Analysis (CEPA) in partnership with the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit (PMDU) in the Office of the Prime Minister, leads the implementation of the Health Tech Platform’s activities. We are seeking to engage and/or partner with the Ministry of Health, the Parliamentary Committee on Health, and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, in our work aimed at improving the policy and regulatory frameworks to guide the development and use of emerging technologies and tools for tackling health challenges.

We build and nurture mutual relationships with key partners in the East African region including the East Africa Community (Health Programme), the East African Health Research Commission, the East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community, and networks of CSOs, media and manufactures. Our partnerships with these stakeholders focus on fostering conversations, dialogues, decisions and actions on the role of emerging technologies in tackling persisting and emerging health issues in the region.
In November 2021, we hosted a Symposium at the 8th East Africa Health Science Conference on the Role of Emerging Health Technologies in Africa. The symposium discussed the exploratory work going on in Uganda to prepare for the testing of gene drive mosquitoes for Malaria control and elimination. The symposium enhanced awareness about this work as well as eliciting useful insights from stakeholders in the region.
At regional level, we build and nurture strategic partnerships with key stakeholders to promote and foster expanded conversations and dialogues on the development, testing and/or deployment of emerging health technologies, as well as, stimulate decisions and actions needed to enable the development, testing and/or deployment of these technologies to improve health outcomes on the continent.
Key stakeholders include the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), Africa CDC, WHO Africa Regional Office (WHO Afro), the Network of African Parliamentary Committees on Health (NEAPACoH), and networks of CSOs, media and manufacturers, among others.
In October 2021, we convened a session on emerging health technologies with a focus on gene drives for Malaria control and elimination at the 13th NEAPACoH conference. Among others, the session increased awareness among MPs on the ongoing exploratory work for gene drives for Malaria control, and stimulated a lot of interest from MPs who requested for a policy brief on the same.
In other sub-regions of the African continent, we key stakeholders on emerging health technologies to expand interest and stimulate critical conversations and actions needed to promote the development, testing and/or deployment of emerging technologies for tackling health challenges.
The sub-regions of interest include the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS).
