The media is a key partner as it plays a critical role in agenda-setting on national discourses. The Platform works with the media both at national and regional levels through networks of journalists, as well as with individual science/health journalists, with the aim of equipping them to undertake balanced and objective reporting on emerging health technologies and on the basis of evidence.
Additionally, we conduct media dialogues on emerging technologies with researchers and policy experts through several Health platforms to meaningfully contribute to the adoption of evidence-based policies that address health challenges in the continent.
At the national level, we have partnered with the Centre for Policy Analysis (CEPA) in Uganda, a leading not-for-profit think tank engaged in parliamentary democracy to support the Health Tech Platform, including media engagements in Anglophone-speaking countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
In West Africa, we have collaborated with the Centre de Recherche en Santé de Nouna (CRSN) to support media and advocacy, among other Health Tech Platform activities.
The platform conducts media training workshops on emerging health technologies in several African countries. We aim to enhance their understanding of the role of emerging technologies in reducing disease burden and saving lives, as well as equip them in evidence-based reporting on the development and testing of these technologies. As part of training on health research reporting, we link journalists with scientists, emerging health technologies innovators and experts to facilitate media interviews and TV/radio panel discussions.
The platform has partnered with media networks in Africa to introduce an annual award of excellence for best reporting on emerging health technologies and their potential in addressing health challenges. The purpose of the media award is to stimulate interest and increase the volume and quality of media stories on development and use of these technologies in Africa.
